Aprende a comprobar y ajustar la presión de los neumáticos de la bicicleta de tu hijo. Esta guía cubre los rangos de psi, los errores más comunes y el manómetro adecuado para neumáticos de bicicletas infantiles.
Quick answer
Use a tire pressure gauge designed for low psi ranges (0–60 psi) to measure the pressure when the tire is cold. Inflate to the psi printed on the sidewall of the tire, typically 30–40 psi for kids' bike tires.
Why accurate psi matters for kids' bike tires
Under-inflated tires make pedaling harder and increase the chance of pinch flats. Over-inflated tires reduce traction and make the ride harsh, which can be uncomfortable for a child. The correct pressure balances rolling resistance, grip, and comfort.
Choosing the right gauge
Most standard car tire gauges are not accurate at the low pressures used on kids' bikes (20–50 psi). A dedicated bicycle pump with an integrated gauge or a standalone digital gauge that reads down to 0.5 psi increments gives you a precise measurement.
Prevelo Replacement Tires are available in multiple sizes (e.g., 14x1.5, 20x1.5, 24x2.1) and each size has a recommended psi range printed on the sidewall. Matching the gauge to that range ensures you don't over- or under-inflate.
How to measure tire pressure in 4 steps
- Step 1: Read the sidewall psi range: Look at the printed text on the tire sidewall. It will show a range (e.g., 30–50 psi) or a single recommended pressure. This is the target, not the maximum safe limit. If the sidewall is worn off, use a safe starting range of 30–40 psi for typical kids' tires.
- Step 2: Remove the valve cap and press the gauge firmly onto the valve: For Schrader valves (the same type as car tires), push the gauge straight on until you hear a slight hiss. For Presta valves, first unscrew the small lock nut at the top, then press the gauge on. A hissing sound while pressing means the gauge isn't seated fully. Reposition so the gauge seals around the valve stem.
- Step 3: Read the pressure when the gauge stops moving: Most gauges give a reading in 1–2 seconds. If using a digital gauge, wait for the number to stabilize. Write down the reading, then compare it to the sidewall target. Check the pressure when the tire is cold (after the bike has sat for at least an hour). Riding heats the tire and gives a falsely high reading.
- Step 4: Add or release air as needed: If pressure is below the range, use a pump with a gauge to add air in short bursts, rechecking after each burst. If overinflated, press the small pin inside the valve to let out a little air, then measure again. Don't exceed the maximum psi printed on the sidewall. Overinflation can cause the tire to burst or lose traction.
Products mentioned
- Replacement Tires: Prevelo Bikes Replacement Tires are offered in sizes from 14x1.5 to 26x2.1, each with a specific model option. Choosing the correct model ensures the tire fits your wheel and the sidewall psi marking matches the intended use, so you can inflate to the correct pressure every time.
